The body of pregnant women often undergoes serious changes during pregnancy and many of these changes are no longer seen immediately after the pregnancy period when the baby is born. One of the changes in the body of pregnant women during pregnancy is stretch mark appearance. Stretch marks do not leave usually after the pregnancy period when the baby is born. There are ways to prevent the occurrence of stretch marks during pregnancy and some of them are listed below.

Stretch marks usually appear at around the 6th and 7th month of the pregnancy. The reason why stretch marks appear during pregnancy is because the skin has been forced to expand too much than it should. You can equate your skin to a piece of elastic, if you over stretch it, it will lose some of its elasticity and won’t return to its original form, and you may even find that it becomes wrinkled along the edges. The best way to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy is to maintain good diet by eating good food. Your body and especially your belly needs time to patiently adapt to the baby growing. A healthy diet during pregnancy is one that is rich in nutrients and includes foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and cereals, and lean proteins. For people who are of normal weight before the pregnancy period, should be sure of gaining about 25 to 30 pounds as they get to the pregnancy stage. Overweight people should reduce a little during pregnancy and underweight people should add a little weight during pregnancy. Keeping your weight gain during pregnancy is the secret to preventing stretch marks during pregnancy.

Another way of preventing stretch marks during pregnancy is by take a lot of water. Make water your friend during pregnancy. Make sure you take up to 8 glasses of water daily during pregnancy. You can increase this if you are into exercise and especially when the weather is hot. If you are not drinking enough water then your skin will become dry and it will not have the elasticity that it needs to handle the stretching during pregnancy. You should include fruit juice, regular tea and coffee in the drinking. Be careful about your intake of caffeine during pregnancy. The health of the baby in the pregnancy can also be kept at balance by simply drinking lots of water.

Maintaining the elasticity of your skin to avoid stretch marks can be achieved by moisturizing your skin to protect it from sun. There are some skin moisturizers that are not pregnancy safe; visit your pharmacist and inquire for skin moisturizers that are pregnancy safe. While most commonly used products are completely safe, some creams contain ingredients that doctors recommend you avoid such as “retinoids”, commonly used in anti-aging creams.

When choosing your moisturizer, keep in mind that not all moisturizer suits everyone. You can test your skin moisturizer on a small part of your skin first to be sure it suits you and especially during your pregnancy stage.
